Twelve sprinters have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Malaguerra remains an outright $3.40 favourite in 2016 Winterbottom Stakes betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Terravista ($3.50), Rock Magic ($8.50) and Takedown ($9).
Will Malaguerra justify favouritism and win the 2016 Winterbottom Stakes, or will one of his rivals post an upset?
Terravista is arguably the class horse of the Winterbottom Stakes field, is drawn ideally for a good run in barrier 5 and has the notable advantage of Hugh Bowman in the saddle. A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of the Darley Classic, Terravista resumed this year for a close second in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) and was kept only to a light autumn campaign; contesting two subsequent starts. Having savaged the line for second in the Listed Mumm Stakes (1000m) on November 3rd, the Captain Rio gelding will have no issue performing to a high standard with 58.5kgs in tow.
First Among Equals ($18)
Local sprinter First Among Equals has been luckless in two runs this time, but is undoubtedly one of the better Perth hopes of winning the Winterbottom Stakes and should find conditions to suit on Saturday. Posting a career total of ten wins and six minors through twenty-two competitive starts, the Exceed And Excel gelding was a standout during his winter preparation; winning each of the Listed HG Bolton Sprint (1200m) and Listed Belmont Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before finishing second in the Listed Idyllic Prince Stakes (1300m). Sure to find a good position off pace from barrier 9, First Among Equals will look to swoop the Winterbottom Stakes field late.
Takedown has undoubtedly returned to racing in career-best form this season and is undoubtedly in his best position to break through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Winterbottom Stakes. Resuming for consecutive wins in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) and Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m), the Stratum gelding finished second to Voodoo Lad in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) before a luckless run for fifth in the Group 3 L’Oreal Paris Stakes (1400m) last time out on November 3rd. Takedown has reportedly taken well to his time in Perth so far and should be right in the finish of most 1200m races.
