Malaguerra has been confirmed to line up for the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse on November 26th, following his second win at the highest level of racing last time out.
Malaguerra began his racing career under the guidance of Wez Hunter in 2015, but undoubtedly stepped up in class and quality when he was transferred to the care of Lee & Anthony Freedman prior to his 2015 campaign.
Having arrived at the Gelagotis operation after winning the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) most notably in winter this year, the son of Magnus finished second in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) first-up before returning to winning form with a narrow win in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 5th.
Racing Manager for brother Peter (trainer), Manny Gelagotis told AAP that Malaguerra has come through his Darley Classic win well and is ready for a strong third-up run in the Winterbottom Stakes 2016.
“The owner is from Perth so the aim was to give him a sprint campaign in the spring, just short and sharp, with three runs,” Gelagotis said.
“Then we’ll tip him out. I think he’s a really good seven furlong (1400m) horse into the future so I’m looking forward to getting him out to 1400 metre races in the autumn.
“His class will take him a long way.
“I think him and Terravista look the form-ine. They’re two really good sprinters.
“We’re just hoping for a bit of luck and hoping the race pans out right.”
Malaguerra was a strong and consistent performer for Team Freedman through the 2015 Spring Carnival; winning four of his five starts including the Emirates Airline Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on Stakes Day.
Resuming this year for sixth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) in what was his only other start prior to the BTC Cup, Malaguerra was sent to the paddock after failing to fire and ninth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11th.
Malaguerra is currently a $3.20 favourite in early 2016 Winterbottom Stakes betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
