Sixteen sprinters have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2015 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Buffering has returned to racing in typically slick form this time and remains clear $4 favourite in 2015 Winterbottom Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($5.50) and Watermans Bay ($7.50).
Will Buffering justify favouritism and post a sixth Group 1 victory in the Winterbottom Stakes or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Popular veteran Buffering has form around the world’s best sprinters this time and will be very hard to beat in the Winterbottom Stakes at the weight, with regular hoop Damian Browne aboard and from barrier 9. Undoubtedly registering career-best form to date through the 2013 Spring Carnival, the Mossman gelding won each of the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and Winterbottom Stakes in succession. Continuing to impress through 2014, highlighted by a win in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m), Buffering successfully defended the Moir crown first-up this time and has since finished fifth in the Manikato Stakes and fourth in the Darley Classic.
Watermans Bay ($7.50)
Second placegetter in last year’s edition of the Winterbottom Stakes, Watermans Bay is clearly suited to the Ascot conditions and is sure to be given a gem of a ride on Saturday by Steve Arnold. Progressing to success in the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) following the 2014 Winterbottom, the Eternity Range gelding continued to impress over the Perth summer before a trip east delivered a credible fifth in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) and success in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) most notably. Having received an ideal tune up when second in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) on November 3rd, Watermans Bay is sure to lay a great account for himself on Saturday.
The Grant Williams-trained Silverstream undoubtedly faces a big leap up in class in the 2015 Winterbottom Stakes but has been confirmed to be partnered by champion hoop Damien Oliver and will carry a race-low 56.5kgs. Posting five wins through eight career starts so far, the Al Maher mare is yet to taste anything but success through three starts this time; highlighted by success over notable competition in the Seacorp BM72 (1000m) last time out on October 31st. Allocated the ideal barrier 6, Silverstream has beaten a number of her Winterbottom Stakes opponents already this season.
