A standout performer over his current preparation which peaked with an impressive victory in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) in Grafton on Wednesday, trainer Rod Northam has revealed he is eyeing major sprinting events over the back of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival for talented gelding Big Money, including a possible tilt at the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
Yet to field a runner in major events over the Melbourne Carnival, Northam is undoubtedly offered his best chance of success through Big Money, who has now secured an incredible seven wins and four second places from just 11 competitive starts.
Notable for overcoming even the widest draw to claim victory, Northam said the Choisir gelding will return to the spelling paddock before targeting late Victorian sprints and possibly a trip to Perth for the Winterbottom.
“He has pulled up really well but I’ll turn him out for a break now,” Northam told The Daily Telegraph.
“I’ll look at the back-end of the Melbourne spring for him and if he measures up then there is every possibility he could go to Perth. If he doesn’t, then we can always come back a cog or two.”
Returning to racing with an impressive victory in the Arrowfield Autumn Sprint (1000m) on May 2nd, Big Money overcame an early check to charge home and win the Segenhoe Stud BM75 (1100m) just two weeks later.
Traveling to Queensland to contest events over the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the gelding out of Lyn’s Money was unlucky to finish second to Cape Kidnappers in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) before returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) prior to his Ramornie Handicap triumph.
