Barakey & Buffering Will Avoid Speed Battle In 2013 Winterbottom Stakes

November 21st, 2013

Trainer Robert Heathcote has decided not to take on Barakey in the early stages of Saturday’s 2013 Winterbottom Stakes with Buffering.

Buffering is usually the front runner in the majority of his races, however, Heathcote feels that a tough battle at the beginning of the race could ruin his chances when it came to the crucial final stages.

The Mossman gelding has on 14 of his 37 race starts and has earned more than $3.66 million in prize money during his horse racing career.

Buffering will be ridden by usual jockey Damien Browne when he lines up for the 2013 Winterbottom Stakes in the attempt to win three Group 1 races in a row.

“I will leave the riding instructions to Damian but I don’t imagine Buffering going head-to-head with Barakey in a speed battle,” Heathcote said.

“I’ve got healthy respect for Barakey on his home patch.”

Buffering won the $1 million Manikato Stakes two starts back, before claiming the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic in dominant fashion at Flemington last run.

Barakey’s trainer, Jim Taylor, is hoping Barakey can continue his flawless record in Western Australia.

“He will strip fitter on his Prince Of Wales win but he will have to be against the likes of Buffering,” Taylor said.

“Buffering has been up against Black Caviar and Hay List and is the one to beat but Barakey will be giving him a run for his money.”
