Winterbottom Stakes 2011 Given Group 1 Status

July 25th, 2011

The 2011 Winterbottom Stakes has been elevated by the Australian Pattern Committee to Group 1 status as of this year.

The Winterbottom Stakes 2011 will take place on Saturday November 19, 2011 at Ascot Racecourse in Western Australia.

The change is just in time to further accommodate Black Caviar, who is expected to run in the Winterbottom Stakes 2011 as part of her upcoming spring campaign.

David Hunter, who represents Western Australia on the Australian Pattern Committee, was pleased with the outcome.

“The Western Australian breeding industry has produced some of the world’s leading sprinters in recent years and it is pleasing connections will now have an opportunity to compete in a Group One sprint event in their home state with the newly elevated Winterbottom Stakes,” he said.

However, the elevation of the Winterbottom Stakes 2011 comes as the previously Group 1 WATC Derby was decreased to Group 2 status.

Mr Hunter said that he understood why the change was made.

“Although it is disappointing for Western Australia to lose Group One status on the WATC Derby, it has become obvious the race has failed to consistently perform to Group One standard in recent years,” Mr Hunter said.
